Berlin-based curatorial platform TRAUMA stages a night of music, art and performance at U122AE, in collaboration with Companion Culture on the occasion of Art Basel Paris. Unfolding beneath the 18th arrondissement, the program features sets by Europa and Emma DJ with cxoxc, a performance by Raphaelle, and site-specific light environment by Matière Noire.
Three levels underground, in the subterranean vaults of the former French retailer Tatí, the night kicks off with a DJ set by Europa. The German-born, Paris-based musician has worked closely with artist Esben Weile Kjær, creating the audio environment for Solar System at Kunsten Museum of Modern Art (Aalborg), the soundscape for Kjær’s Milky Way exhibition at TRAUMA, and the Galaxy Parade performance at Neue Nationalgalerie (Berlin).
The night moves into the raw intimacy of Raphaelle’s live performance, a singer-songwriter whose artistic range spans heart-felt piano ballads recorded at Abbey Road Studios to underground site-specific performances, where vocal intimacy collides with club chaos.
Next are longtime collaborators Emma DJ and cxoxc, shifting towards hybrid forms of rap, bridging raw vocal elements with soul crushing electronica. Emma DJ gained early support from figures such as Thom Yorke and Virgil Abloh, establishing himself as one of Paris’ most prolific producers, selectors and club initiators. cxoxc is one of Emma DJ’s main vocal collaborators in his infamous Godrime mixtape series, of which they will be premiering brand new material from its’ third installment. Closing the night, Europa joins Emma DJ for a final B2B set.
The Paris-based creative studio Matiere Noire will transform the club with a site-specific light environment. Hidden utility racks, once backstage infrastructure, are reimagined as a centerpiece: a dense accumulation of wash lights, excessive by design, turns pragmatism into spectacle. What was concealed now floods the space, bringing intensity and excess to the core of the performances. Recently named the inaugural recipient of L’Incubateur, the initiative by The Independents and Alexandre de Betak is recognized for its new approaches to spatial design – with past collaborations including Courrèges, Hermès and Fondation Cartier.
